[CQ-Contest] This weekend contest

I first saw the "LoTW Contest" listed on WA7BNM's Contest Calendar last
night, and the first thing which popped into my mind was "Why?"
What is the point? Just about anybody can start a contest. In the
movie "Field Of Dreams" there was the now famous line, "If You Build It
They Will Come". However, for a radio contest you're asking for the
participants to invest their time. In order for a contest to attract
significant levels of activity and be successful, there needs to be a
significant reason for it. I just don't see the reason for a contest
named after a QSLing database. If you're looking for DX, scheduling a
contest for it three weeks before is CQWW SSB seems pretty foolish.
IMHO, the contest calendar is getting cluttered with "junk" contests.
While there is no worldwide organization who could bring order to this
chaos, contesters will "vote with their activity" and only participate
in events they judge worthwhile.
I, for one, have zero interest in the LoTW Contest, but I *will* get on
for the Pennsylvania QSO Party this weekend. That's just my preference...
