[CQ-Contest] Improper WPX Exchanges

You know, there's a funny thing about serial numbers...

They're not always consecutive.

A few years back, I was one of the operators from W4ZE/3 in the Pa QSO
Party. The logging program that Ted was using was configured to give the
next consecutive serial number to whichever station/operator requested it --
and since we had several transmitters running at the same time, most of the
time, on different bands or modes... and at different rates... it could be,
ah, interesting.

So, Station 1 could have requested, say, SN 400... and while working a tough
customer, Station 2 got SN 401, 402, 404 -- 403 and 405 went to Station 3...
so Station 1's next SN was 406.

Imagine the exchange:
"NX3XXX, QSL, you're number 406 Washington County, QSL?"
"W4ZE... wait, did you say 406? Don't you mean 401?"
"No, you're number 406."
"But you just gave the last guy 400!"

While I'm paraphrasing... yes, this did happen (if not word for word) more
than a few times.

So... if some Big Gun running as Tom suggests just assumed that the next SN
was consecutive... and it's not... well...

If we really want to up the rate during the pileups, why don't we just
give the serial number every other QSO? Most Q's are casual ops who
really do not care what the serial number is, so why waste their time.
On top of that, since it is a pileup, everybody but the station who got
through will already know what number you are on, so why bother sending
it. For the big gun who gets through on the first call, waiting another
10 seconds probably equalizes the competition for the stations that are
not as loud.

Rate is king, and we don't need any archaic rules slowing us down.

Is anyone else bothered by serious WPX competitors not giving out a
signal report ?

"V. Exchange: RS(T) report plus a progressive contact three-digit serial
number starting with 001 for the first contact."

A short list of those giving out only a serial number, from just a few
hours of
listening:
