Familiarity. These users have gained familiarity with all the quirks and
commands of their particular software package, and there is a non-trivial
learning curve on any other piece of software. Plus, by and large
contesters are men. For us change is different and different is BAD!
We see the same phenomenon with the text editors that software developers
use. Try and get an Emacs guy to use vi, or God forbid Microsoft Visual
Studio! It's said software developers are a lot like baby geese, they get
imprinted by the first editor they use, and it becomes like their mother.
There is a special bond and love that can never be replaced.
