[CQ-Contest] cqww ssb spotting report

Thanks to David.

Looking at his table against my log, on the nine occasions that I was
spotted my rates, as they should, went through the roof. For a small pistol
station it was very satisfying - especially five minutes before the end when
the spot clearly helped me get over the 1000 mark. You know when you've been
spotted!

Cheers,

Terry

Disclaimer: Whilst G4MKP gratefully accepts spots, spotters do so at their
own risk. This is not a request for spotting during future contests but no
future spotting during contests will be refused. This product may contain
nuts. Remember, stock values can go up as well as down (apparently!)

I am not surprised. At 6Y1V, due to the 1 point disadvantage between NA
Caribbean and SA Caribbean, we often operate below 14.150Mhz when the
band is open to Europe. You would be surprised to know how many US
stations will travel out of band to call us.

I simply inform them they are "out of band" and do not work them! Many
reply with a simle "Oooops" and move along. The second VFO often reveals
those that don't care and continue to work the other stations below
14.150Mhz, many of those whom will log these illegal contacts.

Interesting was to listen on 7240, a station from KL7 land worked pileup
with Europe simplex!
Somebody told him that is is illegal and he had to work split, then he
worked split with Europe but listened on 7245!

And many stations run on 14.350, after being told that they worked out
of
band some insisted to be within band limits, others moved and were
immediately replaced by another caller

I was mobile on my way back to Colorado from Montana and at the end of
the
contest I noticed a fairly large number of stations working stations
well
after the closing bell.

My watch is synchronized with WWV. Is it too much to ask that people
use
clocks and computers that are accurate in this day and age?

The WW exchange takes about 2 seconds on each side. The contest ends
when
the clock hits 0000 not 0001.

One other pet peeve was a Caribbean or Central American station that was
not
giving out a report each contact.

I managed to work a handful of stations with my mobile setup (20m) and
tried
to work a couple of others twice. There were some very loud EU and AF
stations coming in at times even with the poor conditions.

For what it is worth

I'll have to agree, it is definitely more fun to contest while watching
the real time scoreboard.

I know I am a sponsor, but putting that aside, I think Gerry (W1VE) has
developed a very useful and FUN tool for the amateur community. I wish
people would get over the fear of "letting the competitors know where we
stand" and use the real time scoreboard. The more the merrier!

Try it once and you'll be hooked, I promise!

Because it adds to the fun in real time. No more operating in a vacuum
not
knowing if you are even in the running. Now you can compete in real
time!
Get your friends or club members to do it and compete in real time
amongst
yourselves or compare to the rest of the world. Lots more fun than
waiting
for weeks or months to get some idea how you did. It can also be used
as a
tool to entice non-contesters, it shows them in real time that something
IS
really happening that weekend, a magazine article 9 months later does
nothing to get them on the air THIS WEEKEND! And for multi-ops like
mine
where I have operators coming and going all weekend it gives the 'off'
operators a chance to keep an eye on what is happening, so even if they
can't be here they can enjoy a bit of the action.

Let me know what you need and provide some information about the
project.

I can probably host it for free, or at worst case bandwidth and power
costs!

Subject: [CQ-Contest] World Contest Station Database Redux?

As many are aware, the World Contest Station Database died last winter
when
the web site it was on migrated to another server, which did not support

ASP. Since then, other have tried to bring it back, and even to enhance

it, but to no avail.

I have decided to see if at least I can bring it back to life in its
past
form, with the question of enhancements left pending for now. The big
thing I need is a low-cost or free host server that supports ASP. If
anyone on this reflector has ideas in this regard, please contact me off

the reflector, and let's see if we can get this thing going again.

Greetings all,

W8CAR will be on with his 'one by three old timer call' (per K5ZD) full time

in SS this weekend (wait, it IS this weekend?-I'm getting soooo old I forget

some contests now and again).

The ARRL is running a poll on the website about SS participation. Maybe take

some time out from watching political ads to add your YES to the
participation poll. WWW.ARRL.ORG

There are a few of us who stopped advancing our station technology
somewhere in the 1950s. I watched W7VKZ work 1953 SS CW with an ARC5 tx
and an NC100 rx and thought ham radio is for me. On 40m i still use as a
driver the Globe Chief 90A kit I made in high school although I replaced
the super pro with an HRO sixty some years back.

I remember Ken, K7GZO in 1954 Fekd Day saying "OK, 20 fone has worked
100, now lets see 20 CW do the same".

At 68 with a torn left shoulder i find it hard to reach up to zero beat
the VFO, but the romance of being able to work a full hundred stations in
a major contest remains......................

Those inrterested:

There is another (different) command just for the Cabrillo output file.
Try going to the same point in your program and instead of
"writelog", type "writecab <enter>" and you should get it. Good luck,

Hal: Nice job, nice writing. Taking a long view of things is always good.

I think that DX contests are for Republicans, and Sweepstakes is for
Democrats.

I will be on in the CW SS, hoping to contribute to a landslide of interest
and activity.

And, I hope to see you in SS 2033.

Big spot weekend, 53059 in the database this weekend. Thats an average of
over 1100/hr on the network. On Saturday there was a peak over 1400/hr in
the 15z hour, and on Sunday it peaked about 1500/hr in the 16z hour. The
database and raw dxsummit data will be available on my web site at
http://www.k1ttt.net/logs/2008cqwwssb_spots.zip shortly after this message
is sent if you want to do more analysis. The database is an Access database
and includes all the queries I use in doing this report plus some more that
may be interesting. Sorry I'm just doing a quick look this time, have been
real busy and need to catch up on some stuff this week...

This one used lots of lower case comments that were similar. and exactly
the same frequency on 40m for lots of them. There were a bunch more of the
40m ones near the group where i dug out the ip address. That ip comes back

I guess I won't be on after all. I better find a Dx contest hi!

I agree it was an interesting read.

I hope we make it past Dec 21, 2012 the end of the Myan calendar.

For some strange reason, K1TTT?s spotting analysis is my favorite
part of the week after every contest.

Agreed! And he should be well commended for it!

Pity that he's kicked over so many rocks and exposed so many little pests
that scurry away, metaphorically speaking, that most have either quit or are
covering their tracks better. But that's another story!
