[CQ-Contest] 40m "new" approach to staying in the band?

I fail to see how this could possibly allow more stations at the bottom 
of the band.  Last time I checked, using USB doesn't cause more spectrum 
to appear, and LSB and USB use the same amount of bandwidth.

Have most hams really lost the ability to know where their transmissions 
are emitted because it doesn't exactly match the dial?

Not that it might not make sense to switch to USB for consistency with 
other bands.
