There sould not be any shades of gray.
Single operator says what it means. Once that contest clock starts to tick then you should be on your own.
The following rules taken from the WRTC website for 2010 competiion would appear to deal with this situation more than adequately.
For most of us common sense tells us what the boundaries are but since obviously some guys need to have everything spelled out maybe other contest committees could adopt a similar wording in their rules.
<i>Before the competition the Teams are allowed to use third party technical support to organize and install the station, as well to install and test software or other permitted devices and peripherals.
During the Contest the Referee is entitled to permit repair of equipment or antennas eventually damaged during the operation. This can be done by operators only. Third party is not allowed in the operating area at any time of competition.</i>
