The "growth" of RTTY contesting is indeed real, but it is coming from a very
small base of 10 years ago.

There were roughly 960 log submissions in 2002 and 1592 in 20010 in ARRL
RTTY Roundup. Compare that to 2400 ARRL DX CW log submissions in 2002 and
3900 in 2010. To answer the DX vs. USA question is quite easy thanks the
ARRL's fine database. In 2002 there were 740 W/VE submissions in the RTTY
Roundup and 930 in 2010. A total of 190 new W/VE RTTY contest logs
submitted. For ARRL DX CW, there were 1144 W/VE logs submitted in 2002 and
in 2010 a total of 1668 W/VE logs were submitted. A total of 524 new W/VE
CW contest logs were submitted.

So in the matter of RTTY vs. CW in W/VE, it would be pretty clear that CW
growth in number of new interested hams is out pacing RTTY growth in the
number of new interested hams by an almost 3 to 1 margin. Regardless of
what it feels like, these are the numbers.

NA QSO Party vs. ARRL RTTY Roundup is probably a different matter but these
are the facts on the modes.
