There are lots of options for level converters for both legacy and USB
serial ports. If you would rather roll your own, the Icom CT-17 is
based on a MAX-232 chip design, and the circuit is widely available on
the 'net. I've built several of them over the years. I would not let
the level converter requirement stop you from considering an older
Icom transceiver.  73
