One reason that contest logs can't be directly uploaded to LOTW is that the database includes information for each qso that is not contained in all contest log entries: grid squares, states, and zones. There is no easy way to fill those in for every contest entry without a lot of work. It is much easier to just let the individual stations upload their logs to LOTW.

I suppose one solution would be to leave blank those "extra" fields for contest qso's, making some LOTW qso's ineligible for WAS/etc awards.
