[CQ-Contest] Yamaha CM500

Art,

The CM-500 comes with a bias adapter (uses two AAA batteries) for those rigs
that do not provide the voltage for the electret mic in the CM-500.
ICOM & K3 provide the voltage, so you won't need the 3V adapter with those
rigs.

Also, if you use your PC sound card as your interface to your rig (any rig),
you won't need the 3V adapter either. The sound card provides the voltage
for the CM-500.

I use my CM-500 with my PC's sound card, using the circuit described in the
N1MM manual.
If you do that, your PC must be "on" to get the mic to work. (How do I know
that, do you think?)

One con about the CM-500:
The CM-500 headphones are not noise cancelling. They lower the volume of
outside noise when you put them on to some extent, but
they are not the type for use in a multi-op station SSB contest environment
where other operators are working SSB nearby to you.
Single-op, they are fine.

Many of you have recommended them (and not for the first time).

KL7RA says "They plug into the $8 Syba SD-CM-UAUD USB Stereo Audio Adapter
to provide the correct DC for the mic which also provides an excellent
soundcard for the WinTest Digital Voice Keyer option."

But from the B and H Photo web site, it says:

*Note!* * Do not use phantom power. The maximum voltage is 15v which is
provided by the included bias adapter.*

So, do you need the Syba (or whatever) external box to get the DC, or does
the CM500 come with an adapter (and the Syba is just for those other
functions that Rich mentioned)?
