The 1928 ARRL DX Contest (known then as the "February International
Test") offered three pages of prizes for the winners. If you are an
ARRL member you can look at pages 33-35 and 45 of February 1928 QST
for the details.

Most of the prizes were important parts for home-brew radios, but
there were some factory-assembled transmitters and receivers. Who
wouldn't keep his butt in the chair just a bit longer in the hope of
winning a Federal Radio Corporation "EIO Ortho-Sonic" 6-tube receiver?

Total value of the prizes was over USD4000 (equivalent to over USD50k
today). I'm not sure when or why the practice was discontinued.

The February 1928 contest was fourteen days long. The results were
published in August. Hmmm...in 2014, the results of the ARRL CW DX
Contest held in February were published in....August.

Plus ca change...

73,

Doug K1DG
