I really don't have enough information but from my
experience, about 30 QSOs per hour are pretty normal
for a non-powerful station when you are Searching/Pouncing
on stations, when you do NOT use internet spotting.
A station USING spots, in S&P mode can easily hit
100 Q/hr with a good station, and certainly 60 per
hour with a fairly good station.
But to make rate, you really need to RUN, i.e., call
CQ and make contacts, IF you can find a clear spot
and have a fairly good station.
Any of those above differences between your station
and his could easily account for the difference.
As just an aside, on 10 Meters, stations in South
Texas work MANY stations that we can't hear,
150 miles away.

Subject: [CQ-Contest] What am I to think?
What should I think if I am 150 miles from a top scoring contest operator in a middling location, not horrid place and.........
I am a good short term contester and my co-operator is excellent. We were on the whole contest and made about 37 Qs per hour overall. We fully experienced dead bands/times, and did diligent search for any possible people to work, working out several bands several times.
Now abt 150 miles away, that other contest operator turned in over 90, that is NINETY, contacts per hour averaged over the whole contest (phone).
What am I to think? how did 'the other guy' get such a much higher rate when we were hearing the same bands????
Lets give the other guy a rate of 30 more QSO per hour to allow for his skill, desirable call sign, but same antennas. That makes a huge 67 Qs/hour. or more than one per minute, FOR THE WHOLE CONTEST, averaging over the whole time. Sixty-seven is still huge.
What am I to think? K4VUD
Details of who/where are cloaked but principle is same
