If you really want a “level” playing field, set up a “contest” using one of the simulators. Everyone then has exactly the same conditions and “station” capabilities.

The “unlevel” conditions is what makes things interesting. Otherwise I’ll go play video games.

How do you then make it a level playing field ?

The problem is the playing field cannot ever be level - location,
propagation, equipment, pocket depth

 are all anomalies.

Regional championships would be one way forward - why should a dxpedition to
a rare location be able to be used to add points against other stations who
competed in say W9 ?

Maybe like the Olympics what is needed is that the qualifier is put forward
by the IARU representative body under their own criteria.

It is a very tough course to travel but overall the organisers seem to put
it together each time and the attendees have fun.

Wonder if by the time we get to 2022 that the organisers decide to have RTTY
as one of the modes ?

I don't want to state the obvious, but I will anyways.  I like to create
discussion.



As well as being a good op, to get to WRTC you have to either have deep
pockets, live close to a big contest station who will host you or have a big
(or VERY big) station of your own.

(or be lucky enough to live in a WRTC area with all average to a little
above average station sizes in that area)



Qualifying for WRTC is not a fair process.  Yes, on the day of the event,
it's very fair, but a lot of the folks there (perhaps not all.it depends
where you live) have

either travelled to many big (or rare) stations, have a large-ish closeby
station they can pilot, or own one of their own.



Let me be abundantly clear that I certainly do not begrudge those that have
SUPER stations on the salt water and can work EU on 80m 2.5hrs before
sunset, (I can honestly say if I had the $$, I would do the same, so I'm no
hypocrite ) but please don't anyone believe that the guys on the field have
all competed using the same sized stations (or even SIMILAR sized) stations,
in order to be sitting in that WRTC tent seat.



That's just not reality.
