Life membership was indeed a good deal back in 71 when I got mine. I think it was around $125 back then and to a guy just out of college it was a lot of money. However, 46 years later it was a hell of a deal. Today's larger amount may well turn out to be a good deal, who knows? Anyone remember when CQ was on the ropes in the 70s and was offering life memberships. I passed on that one since I thought they might go under...I was wrong.

Subject: [CQ-Contest] Life Memberships. Was: QSLing

Life memberships with benefits included, are a thing of the past.

I have already lost two life memberships. The first one, the
organization's life ended before mine. The other simply ignored its
existence (life membership), and started charging for everything.

The only life membership I have now is to the QCWA, but I don't think I
would get it at current rates.

I wanted very much to buy an ARRL life membership way back when, but the
money was simply not there. Those that got it in the last 25 years or
so, got their money's worth. I'm not sure it is a good deal today.

The other down side of any life membership, is that the organization has
your money for life, you have no say, or they don't care about what you
say. :^)

I only buy yearly memberships now. I lose the multiple year discount,
but can re-evaluate the membership every year, and cut my 'losses'
sooner, if needed.

The one "benefit" I get from being a life member is QST every month, and
that arrives 1-2 weeks after the digital version has been posted. Since
it is now 50% adverstisment, I can peruse it in very short order.

Yes, I too, was a struggling teacher when I obtained my life member
status. In retrospect, had I known how the ARRL has evolved, I probably
would not have wasted my money.
