Steve,

While it's true that sometimes two stations will listen on the same
frequency, I don't think this happens intentionally. It most likely a
scenario where neither is able to generate rate and so the conflict goes
unnoticed (or the same callers are naively entered in both logs for a
while).

Aside from that situation, I think split operations (particularly by big
stations who *are* able to generate rate) occupy twice the spectrum of
single frequency operation.

Tangentially, I've found that most of the frequency holding power one has
over a run frequency is due to the callers, not the running station's
signal. The neighbor encroaching on the frequency may not hear me loudly,
but if he hears my callers he'll move away.  Odds are that some of my
callers are loud enough to disrupt his too-close run frequency even if my
signal is not.

At any rate, this is an interesting discussion.
