[CQ-Contest] Control Operators and Contesting

at one time commercial radios had to have a cw id.. .. it takes a long time to send 7 characters.. when the dispatcher is very busy. So.. being very helpful tech.. the cw speed was set a mite bit faster...

two days.. is what it took to get the call from the local FCC office.. the fellow said that the id was good.. but sending it at 50 wpm was just a bit out of the range of ability of the average inspector catch. They simply didn't want to wait for the next id. It fired once every hour, I believe.

He was nice about it.. but made it quite plain that it would be very appreciated to slow it down.

Not being real bright.. the question jumped right outta my mouth.. what about the hams that run 50 - 60 wpm all the time?

He politely informed me that they had variable speed playback on the recorder that they used every time they listened to the ham bands. Slight pause.. then he asked what band I usually used...

you know.. I id'd very regular for quite a while.. and under 30 wpm too.

Have a great day,

A repeater ID is one of the exceptions. I have been in repeater "wars" and
it can get nasty. I hope "I'm sorry, Won't do it again" was a sufficient
response. --73, Mike, WV2ZOW
