On the subject of the appropriateness of sending something other than the correct year-first-licensed as a check during SS, allow me to play devil's advocate.

Isn't a signal report part of the required exchange in many contests?

I wonder how many folks who want accurate SS checks ever send anything other than 5NN / 59 / 599 as their signal reports in those contests.
