Yes, of course, like many I use a club callsign (for which I am the trustee) in WPX because unusual prefixes have an advantage.  However, there is no doubt that AC1U is not DX somewhere.  It’s a plain vanilla US station.

 

The fact that 4U1WB gets so many people questioning that he is a valid Q in ARRL DX, is the proof that many would assume he is a special DX station and not a US station.

 

Obviously we disagree.  Thanks for the comments.

The logic that one cannot improve one’s callsign demand is flawed because many use different callsign in WPX. In fact you use AC1U. If they were to truly make it “fair” they would require everyone to use their own everyday callsign. But of course they wouldn’t because the rare prefixes are what makes the contest interesting. 

 

More examples:

 

KP, KH or KL station operating in CONUS. Some casual ops might think they are from their call areas. 

 

OR an extreme example - if Martti Laine decided to operate stateside or even remote with his personal call AH3D (Johnston island) this would be perceived as an unfair advantage?

 

I don’t even see 4U1WB beating out most of the top 10 anyway and a lot of the top 10 don’t have rare prefixes. 

 

The fact that 4U except UN and ITU is counted as host country is a quirk of the DXCC and CQ DX lists.

In the ARRL DX contest – its of no value – in fact its clearly a hinderence.  Being right, but having to repeat and explain is a contest killer.  But in WPX, no one cares where you are (other than wondering why the points for the Q don’t look right), they just know they need a new prefix.  Add that to the fact that some percentage of callers probably think they just worked a new one (4U1 must be UN HQ no?) and its just not good sportsmanship in my opinion.  

 

4U1WB and any other 4U1 should compete for NA not for W.

Fair? Nothing is fair... might as well require everyone to operate with the same antennas and location while you’re at it.

As to WPX, a 4U1 callsign is clearly an advantage in a Prefix contest.  It
does  not seem fair to me that a 4U1 can compete equally with a W1 in the
WPX contest.
