My two cents.
I've hauled around the XS suffix since 1977.  One set of phonetics for all the time use doesn't cut it.  Obviously X-ray is a given.  However, when working or calling a South American I always  use Santiago.    For daily use or contest sugar makes it better than Sierra.  
Now the prefix KH7 normally would be kilo hotel seven, but King Henry rolls off the tongue so much easier.

Phone contests using states -  one place where ?Ohio? comes through very nicely. Much easier than ?West Central Florida?.

A favorite phonetics story is about Jeff, K8ND, some years back, who would occasionally use  ?Kilowatt Eight North Dakota? for his phonetics.

Calling in a pileup, the other guy comes back ?stand by, everybody stand by, please only the North Dakota station!!?

Jeff comes back ?QSL, this is Kilowatt Eight North Dakota, you?re five nine Ohio?.

I enjoy my "Willie Nelson Four" phonetics...

I need a better phon for "W". I don't really care for Whiskey. It doesn't
work well for me. Any better ideas.

The problem that I deal with is folks always leave the "Whiskey" off the
front-end. I had a gent tell me in the VAQP that it was too early for
whiskey.

Sloppiness in copying  (VE9AA's QSL manager in Ontario).  Serves them right

Yes, UBN is a very strong and convincing tool.

A UBN for RDXC 2001 motivated me to change my (then very good) call VA3UZ to (not so good) VE3DZ in 2002. :-)

As for "MD" - the best cure IMO would be "Mexico Denmark". A bit long, but works well on ESL operators (myself included). :-)
