If I recall, the category was first adopted by ARRL and then later by CQ WPX. Not sure that it's continuation has anything to do with RHR...
I don't see much downside for it to continue. It will likely be a niche category that let's people try new things and get people on the air. It won't necessarily increase the number of callsigns available to work, but it does create new opportunities for experimentation and training.
