You are correct, Paul. WSJT-X requires operator involvement to initiate
every contact, but as you say there are ways around that. There are
derivatives of WSJT-X out there that don't have that requirement and can
be fully automated, and it is even possible to write a script that
automates the "operator" initiation in WSJT-X.
Of course, that doesn't mean that both sides of the contact are fully
automated. I've worked that notorious FT8 bot on the west coast of
Africa and while he was fully automated, I was not.
