Part of the deal you make with the devil when you use free email services is some level of tracking.
Google Gmail is certainly the most active, especially if you use the Chrome browser a lot (Google) and use an Android phone (Google), Waze, YouTube, etc and of course the Google search engine.
When you sign in to one email app (like Gmail) you are by default signed into all Google apps.  If you stay logged in to gmail all the time, you are tracked all the time. If you use an Android phone, the only way not to have Gmail running is to delete your account from the phone and only check gmail through a browser.
After much pressure, Google has put in some features to make it easier to minimize the amount of info that is tracked and provided to third parties. This is a pretty good article on how to do so (web/data settings are discussed after location) : https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/google-is-tracking-you-but-there-are-ways-try-to-stop-it/
