Art, in between 1977 and 1978 the CQWW rules added substantial verbiage
defining what was single-op:

1976: Single Operator is just called single operator with NO further
details.

1977: "Single Operator stations are those at which one person performs all
of the operating, logging, and spotting functions"

Now that doesn't mean that having a second person in the shack for logging
was allowed for single ops in 1976. Seems more likely that in 1977 when
they added the verbiage prohibiting spotting networks for single-ops that
they decided to write a few extra words about other functions at the same
time.
