I don't think it's an improvement either.

How about not letting you type a callsign or do anything else 
when you are in the Alt-A window ?

It's easy enough to get out of it by pressing Escape.

If you must, put up a message that says that you're still in the Alt-A window,
and to press Esc to get out.
