With no interesting DX on the band I decided to learn a little about computer programming just for fun. So, I decided to write a Windows 95 based application to control my FT-1000MP. By now it has already some functions been working fine but I still have some trouble with those damned syntax. This application, if works, will be released on the net in a freeware basis. I'd like to exchange experiences with Visual Basic 5.0 programmers and any help will be greatly welcomed. Please send to W1RM@SNET.NET > > Thanks, W1RM > > -- The only way to get CT to work right with comm ports under windows 95 (in most instances), is to disable the comm port in the windows control pannel. Using this method, you DO NOT have to shut down windows 95 and go back to that old 'DOS' mode. I've used it since '95 came out and it works well running under Win 95 and gets along with other windows programs running at the same time. Follow these steps to disable your comm port for CT to use: Click on - 'start', then 'settings' then 'control panel'. Double click on 'system' icon. Then in this system properties box, click on the tab above that says 'device manager'. Then click on the little plus sign next to 'ports'. The available ports will now be listed below the ports heading. Double click on the port that you want to talk to the radio on, using CT. Now, down at the bottom you see a highlighted line that starts with a checkmark box, then says 'Original Configuration (current)'. Click on that checkmark box so the checkmark disappears. Then click on 'OK' below and close everything. Then you are ready to run CT with that port. That is if you have CT set up to the hardware address and IRQ. Use the same proceedure to turn the port back on for the normal radio control programs. 73 and good luck. This year, we finally got it all working. The trick was to use fiber optics to make the links, using small fiber modems at the serial ports. The outer limits of this system are probably in the neighborhood of 250 feet or so. Obviously, RF won't do anything to the fiber signals, but you need clean output for the sytem to work right. If you have an "RF clean" environment, high power shouldn't be an issue. If you attempt this with regular serial cables, I doubt you'll ever get it to work. K1TTT has been experimenting with an ethernet TSR for CT that allows regular network hardware (ethernet/coax) to run. I am not sure how he is progressing with that project. 73, J.P. If you have version 5.84 you will have to contact yaesu for a new prom. I hope yeasu in North America is faster then in The Netherlands, because I ordered one two months ago, and they have to order it in Japan. For those who missed the original request, it is included at the end. Looks like a lot of people had the same problem, so I will summarise. This is a preliminary summary as problem is not completely resolved yet. First of all I would like to say thank you to the following HAM's for the ideas: Tony AE0M, Ken K6PU, Cliff K0CA, Don N6TDM/0, Harry K7GQ, Brad N6GR, Chris GM3WOJ, Henk PA3EOB and Gary W0TM. I hope I did not miss anyone. The only person who did not reply (and I was waiting for reply from him) is the Author of the program... My FT-1000D is Ver. 6. All testing was in DOS. I will try Win 3.1 and Win 95 later, after a complete test of this setup with NA and TR is done. So, the summary is - NONE of the ideas worked on COM4... I've decided to change the COM port. My mouse is on COM1 so the first try was COM2. Believe it or not - it WORKED! The line in .BAT file is like this: COMTSR2 -P2 -B4800 -N82 Than program is loaded with -d option. Unload with COMTSR2 -U I've connected my TNC (PK-232MBX) to COM4 (previously on COM2), revised the setup and it is working fine! The address and IRQ are standard for COM4. The next step is to make them work together (CAT and TNC). I did not have time to do it this weekend. May be next one. So, not sure what is the reason for all this, may be there are computer experts with some ideas... There is a possibility that I have mixed-up jumpers on Flexport 42 card. Will check. But why TNC is working OK on COM4? 73 and thanks to All! Vitaly (VE6JO) ============================================== Hello all at CT-USER forum, I just have got myself an FIF-232C interface and tried it with CT last night but could not make it work... I have Pentium 200 MMX (IPC) computer and use Flexport 42 card that gives me 8 COM ports. FIF-232C is connected to COM4 (yes, I am sure it is COM4) and IRQ is OK. I've created a .BAT file to start the program and to load TSR. The line to load TSR looks like this: COMTSR4 -P4 -B4800 -N82 -I5 Than the program loads with -d option. TSR Unloads before program is terminated. The CAT display (upper left hand corner of the FT-1000D display) blinks but on the bottom line of the logging screen in CT a message "YAESU radio timeout 0" appears. If I key-in let say a call sign, it appears on the screen with about 10 sec. delay. Same delay with any action (F1, F2 etc.) and no keying (TX does not transmit). Any ideas what I did wrong? Your help would be greatly appreciated. I will try it with NA and TR programs on the weekend. What is your experience with this type of setup and these two programs? If you like > CT8 then it will fly after the edit. > 73, Dick Wilder, K3Di wilder@abs.net I haven't looked at a CT screen since FD, but here is what I recall happened when I played with editing the file. The size of the section window is apparently fixed with regard to its verticle height. Currently, the Canada column has one blank space and the new NL section can indeed be added to the current version and CT will score the section, although a person should restrict the NLI section to only NLI as NL will cause the new section to be scored as NLI since the SEC.DAT, FD.DAT and all the other default ARRL .DAT files for version 8.xx allow NL as a valid entry for NLI (whew!). However! I went one step further and tried to add another section to the Canada column (or Californa -- 6) and found the window does NOT enlarge and at least one section will not be displayed, nor would it apparently be scored. Now, I suppose that as RAC adds new sections, they could be added to the shorter columns like 1, 3, or DX and life could go on... Version 8.xx is currently unsupported and will remain so. I have used version 9.27 and while it has a couple of neat tricks for advanced users, as a casual contester I don't find the program's current state attractive enough to spring for the $80 to get it, just to *possibly* get support for more sections. Thus I will be jumping the friendly confines of CT and will move to another. It will be hard to replace CT's simple and elegant features, but I'm afraid its course has run. I did forget to add in this morning's post that Writelog supports Ethernet networking as a standard option. Besides, I'd like to do some other things with my computer during my contest lulls and a Win95 program will allow me to do that and CW contest, control the rig (if I ever get one) and network (doubtful) without having to use the machine in MS-DOS mode. Of course, should the writers of CT catch up, I'd be more than glad to maintain my loyalty. 73, de Nate >> Packet | KA0RNY @ KC5TKF.#NCOK.OK.USA.NOAM | "If wires can be Internet | nbargman@fullnet.net | connected in two Location | Enid, Oklahoma USA EM16bj | different ways, View yet another web page at: | the first way http://www.harvestcomm.net/personal/nbargman/ | blows the fuse!" -- Submissions: ct-user@ve7tcp.ampr.org Administrative requests: ct-user-REQUEST@ve7tcp.ampr.org WWW: http://www.ve7tcp.ampr.org/Software/ct Questions: owner-ct-user@ve7tcp.ampr.org From wrt@eskimo.com (Bill Turner) Fri Aug 29 01:09:01 1997 From: wrt@eskimo.com (Bill Turner) (Bill Turner) Date: Fri, 29 Aug 1997 00:09:01 GMT Subject: [ct-user] CT support and new VE sections In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <34070fbb.959597@mail.eskimo.com> On Thu, 28 Aug 1997 17:30:55 -0400 (EDT), "Dick Wilder (K3DI)" wrote: >No problem with the change of Canadian section. However, the packetcluster software is only used by the packet nodes in the network. Individual users dont need the software. IE, you must have a packetcluster node that your TNC can hear in order to get spots, but your computer just runs the contest software, which is already set up to receive spots sent by the nodes in the packetcluster formats. You dont even have to be connected to the node as long as someone else on the frequency is connected and receiving spots. Check with your local DX or contest club for local VHF/UHF frequencies. If unavailable in your area, you might try tuning around on 30 meters for an active node. w7upf@azstarnet.com on 08/29/97 08:56:03 AM Please respond to w7upf@azstarnet.com To: CT-USER@ve7tcp.ampr.org cc: (bcc: Tyler G Stewart/BENN/CEC) Subject: [ct-user] PacketCluster I have never used a packet cluster aid during contests but am considering it for CQWW in October. "RF Infiltration" I've tried washing it out, I've tried shouting it out...Nothing. One of the things that helped the most was replacing the keyboard. I'm now able to bump the RF out on the TS940 to >100W. I don't know how far from the antenna your computer is. You may have some serious near-field problems that ferrite cores and grounding just won't help. First check to see how much RF the box/computer will take. NO! Don't try to use it for a dummy load. PC's are not known as effective radiators. Although, if you listen to every other bit of RF squeaks and squaks that come out of it, you may say otherwise. Turn off the PC and unplug all the wires from the computer except the AC input, keyboard and monitor. Make sure the internal PC speaker is plugged in. Turn the PC on and bring the PC up to a 'DOS' prompt. Unplug the keyboard and monitor. How you do this is your business, start bringing the RF up to a level that you may start hearing clicking sounds from the PC speaker. RF @ max? No sounds? Good! Plug in the monitor and try it again. No Sounds? Good Plug in your keyboard. No Sounds? Are you sure the PC speaker is connected? Still no sounds? Excellent! When you do find the errant RF attracting component, ground it, ferrite it, shield it, or remove it and try to find a replacement for it. Having a good ground is important. Grounding is your friend. Bringing all components to that same ground potential is very important. Don't daisy chain grounds. Every component gets its own ground lead. No pushing and shoving that way, and no weird ground line resonances. I can hear the holy wars starting re: correct grounding techniques. It's ok...I wear Kevlar and Nomex briefs. Aside from the keyboard, check the AC feed to your computer power supply. If there is no AC input line filter, install one. The CORCOM line filters (N6KI recommended, KE6WEO tested, mother approved.) work well. They are LC series and C to ground. You want to mount the filter inside the PC(best) or on the shortest possible pigtail from the outside(good). You might also want to wind the AC input line around a ferrite ring. DON'T plug the monitor into the back of the PC. That daisy chains the AC line making it longer and negates the CORCOM on the AC into the PC. Long wires and HF don't mix. Neither does dinking and driving and I've seen alot of dinks on the road this weekend. If none of this makes sense...Que Tal or Cest le vie or write me back and let me know. I have lots of PC's and unix workstations here and they suffer from the same problems. Your mileage may vary, void where prohibited. Careful on that last one. RFI. The scourge of the rabid DXer, contester, HFer, radio operator. PC manufacturers should get as much grief as radio operators for 'disturbing the peace'. 73 & GL DE KE6WEO . . Merilly, merrily, merrily, merrily... --dio BTW: I don't work for CORCOM or the manufactures of Kevlar and Nomex. I do believe in their products. ---------- > From: Randy Thompson > To: 'CT Reflector' > Subject: [ct-user] FW: help > Date: Friday, August 29, 1997 3:51 PM > > Can anyone offer Pedro some suggestions? > > Randy, K5ZD > > -----Original Message----- > From: Pedro Claver Orozco [SMTP:claver96@axisgate.com] > Sent: Thursday, August 28, 1997 9:24 PM > To: k5zd@contesting.com > Subject: help > > hello randall,my name is pedro hk1hhx from colombia. > > congratulations for nice operations in a contest. > > randall i have a little problem,i put my ct 9 contest program and i did try > a made a contest with it but the computer receibe much RF from the radio > station and sometimes is imposible operate with computer. > > i put grounds i put filters and the problem continue. > > do you have something to help me in this case. > > say me something and tnx for all. > > your friend in colombia hk1hhx > > pedro > > > > -- > Submissions: ct-user@ve7tcp.ampr.org > Administrative requests: ct-user-REQUEST@ve7tcp.ampr.org > WWW: http://www.ve7tcp.ampr.org/Software/ct > Questions: owner-ct-user@ve7tcp.ampr.org -- Submissions: ct-user@ve7tcp.ampr.org Administrative requests: ct-user-REQUEST@ve7tcp.ampr.org WWW: http://www.ve7tcp.ampr.org/Software/ct Questions: owner-ct-user@ve7tcp.ampr.org From P & V Nesbit Sun Aug 31 01:10:23 1997 From: P & V Nesbit (P & V Nesbit) Date: Sun, 31 Aug 1997 10:10:23 +1000 Subject: [ct-user] CT & EMC In-Reply-To: <01BCB4AF.3D552D00@k5zd@ultranet.com> Message-ID: <3.0.1.32.19970831101023.0068bef8@popa.melbpc.org.au> At 21:24 28/08/97 -0500, Pedro HK1HKX wrote: >I have a little problem, I put my CT 9 contest program and I did try >a contest with it but the computer receives so much RF from the radio >station it sometimes is impossible to operate. > >I put in grounds and filters and the problem continues. Do you have >something to help me in this case? > Here is my story. My antenna is an elevated vertical about 20m from the shack. Despite many resonant radials, a solid ground connection directly underneath the antenna, and 1:1 baluns at both ends of the feedline, enough RF was still entering the shack to cause a lot of trouble. Operation on 40m with CT was marginal, and on 80m it was impossible, where I could only use hand logging. I had added RF chokes and capacitors to all the leads between the computer and other station equipment, but the problem still remained. After a particularly big crash in the last ARRL DX Contest, I decided it was time to fix the problem for once and for all. This required several things to be done. 1. Direct RF pickup by the keyboard ----------------------------------- The keyboard contains a large number of diodes, which were rectifying the RF and producing the same effect as if keys were being pressed at random. To fix this, I took the bottom cover off the keyboard, fitted a large brass sheet inside it (cut to shape), and grounded the sheet to the cable where it enters the keyboard case. To prevent short circuits to the internal PCB, I covered the sheet with stick-on plastic film (the type used to cover books). With the keyboard reassembled, the brass sheet shields the circuit board, and prevents the diodes being activated by the RF. This modification was easy to perform, and is very effective. 2. Equipment at different RF potentials --------------------------------------- The next step was to shield the station equipment, and ensure it was all at the same RF potential. With no potential difference, no current can flow, hence the PC should be less likely to be upset by RF. To do this I installed brass sheeting under the whole operating desk, and all the shelves above the desk upon which equipment sits. Under the desk I soldered the sheets together, and to reach the shelves above the desk, I used vertical strips of brass about 75mm wide. To obtain a common earthing point, I attached some brass angle (25 x 25mm) to the rear of the desk. This is connected to the sheet underneath the desk with long screws and nuts, and also to the vertical strips going to the shelves above the desk. I also added short grounding wires from the brass angle to each piece of equipment, including the computer. Previously, my equipment had all been plugged into separate power points. I did not like the possibility of the power leads forming a large loop, which might intercept RF energy from the antenna and cause potential differences between the equipment, so I fitted a six-way power board to the desk, and grounded it to the brass sheet with a short piece of wire. 3. Better computer case ------------------------ My computer was an ordinary desktop unit, with the keyboard plugging into the rear. I had always disliked the way the keyboard cable was connected directly to the motherboard, with no grounding to the case. As I needed a larger case to accomodate a new CD-ROM drive, I went out and bought the best tower case I could find. The slight extra cost was well worth it. The new case has spring fingers all around the outside (to provide a solid RF ground), and best of all, an extra finger to ground the keyboard connector. Everything fitted beautifully, and I would strongly recommend that anyone upgrading their computer case pays the extra few dollars and gets the best one they can find. They will not be sorry. Conclusion ---------- The brass and other construction materials cost about $160, and the station was out of action for about four weeks. The work was well worth it however. Not only did I get RF completely out of the computer, but: * the occasional errors I used to get with the electronic keyer vanished. I had previously blamed these on my own sloppy sending, but in fact they were due to stray RF entering the keyer; * the slight RF warming I used to get from the station equipment vanished; * PC noise is completely absent on receive; * best of all, the level of received power line noise dropped noticeably! This is not so surprising. If stray RF can couple from the antenna into the station, then obviously noise can travel from the station back to the antenna by the same path. By cleaning up RF in the station, I had inadvertantly cleaned up a source of local noise, which unknown to me had been getting into the antenna. This was an unexpected, but most pleasing result. EMC problems can be very elusive and difficult to solve. Often, half-hearted approaches do not work, and we have to adopt a more comprehensive and professional approach. To those who are experiencing problems with RF in their computers, I suggest they stop postponing the inevitable, roll up their sleeves, and get stuck into really fixing the problem. They will be very pleased they did. Having used it in the WAE CW contest, I have noticed a rather significant glitch while using it with CT: For the band map and most (if not all) of the functions where CT reads the radio's VFO frequency, the clarifier must either be OFF or reset to 0.00. Otherwise, CT reads very erroneous data from the radio. This affects the band map, putting out packet spots, grabbing packet spots (if you hadn't cleared the clarifier, when you did the second Alt-F4, you end up in space somewhere, wondering what happened), etc. I have tried this with 9.27 and 9.30 with the same results.
