I've had crashes in which directory entries get corrupted. This makes
the files invisible to normal file managers. Using something like Norton
Disk Doctor to check the disk should find unassigned sectors which it
can link together and save as a file. This might make the file
recoverable if the binary format is preserved. However, if you keep
using the computer before you do this, it may overwrite important
segments (since they aren't listed as being used) and destroy the
coherence of the file.

If the file were in ASCII format, it could be edited with a text editor
and you would only lose a few Q's. unfortunately it's harder to do with
binary files.
