In response to Nancy's question about, "what has sandy done for amateur
radio and hams in georgia?", I would like to respond. On a broader scale
his activities in ARES, Hurricane net, special olympics, etc. are well
known. I refer you to Sandy's website (www.w4ru.com) for the details which
are too numerous to elaborate on here. On a more direct and personal level
I will tell you about how he has helped the Southeastern VHF Society of
which I am now president. If you are not familiar with it, the Southeastern
VHF Society is a relatively young organization (5 years old) formed to
promote weak signal VHF activity. The organization includes members who do
meteor scatter, EME, aurora, etc. We have a yearly technical conference
which is held somewhere in the southeast every year. A fairly esoteric
group with a membership of approximately 100, many of which are not in
georgia or even the southeastern division. When the organizing committee,
including myself, approached sandy 5 years ago asking for his help in
organizing the group he jumped in with both feet. He helped us obtain
official recognition of our group within the ARRL including the printing of
the proceedings for our conference, publicity in QST and door prizes for our
yearly banquet. Whenever I need something from ARRL for the society I just
call sandy and it happens. Two years ago, Joel Harrison, W5ZN, ARRL VP was
scheduled to be our banquet speaker (Sandy arranged this by the way). Joel
fell ill (food poisoning) literally a few hours before the banquet. As we
started to panic he grabbed my cell phone and started making calls. The
next thing I know he tells me that Dave Sumner, K1ZZ, ARRL President will be
coming in on the next flight to take Joel's place. To this day I don't know
how he pulled that off but the banquet was a success thanks to sandy. As
far as as sandy's opponent, NA4AR, is concerned, he may be a great guy, I
don't know. Never met him or heard of him before now. What I do know is
when the Southeastern VHF Society needed help, sandy was there and did a
hell of a lot for this one group of hams. I hope that helps answer your
question.
