The September 2001 VHF Contest Results are now available on the ARRL members
only website. If you are an ARRL member, go check it out. For those who
aren't members (shame on you!) here is a synopsis of the results for W4NH.
693 Qs and 224 Mults for a score of 199,808. This gives us a 5th place
overall finish in the multioperator category. For Mults we placed 6th on 50
MHz, 10th on 144 MHz, 9th on 902MHz and 10th on 1296 MHz. We also scored
9th place for number of Qs on 902 MHz. For comparison purposes, in
September 2000 we had 620 Qs and 202 Mults for a score of 163,418. We have
scored higher from this location but not in this contest. In June 2000 we
had 779 Qs and 254 Mults for a total score of 212,852. For those of you who
weren't there that score was due to an outstanding effort on 6 meters. The
band was open to just about everywhere for most of the contest. If you look
at the results and compare us to comparable stations like AA4ZZ and W4IY we
seem to be able to reach out and be competitive with our grid totals but we
tend to fall behind on the number of Qs. For example both AA4ZZ and W4IY
had only 21 and 32 (10 and 15 %) more grids than we did respectively but
they both had more than twice as many Qs. This may simply reflect their
better geographical location and we can't do anything about it other than
move, I don't know. One thing I do know is that 222 and 432 are our weak
bands and we need to do something in 2002 to get them performing better. We
had the power on 432 and a good rig last year. I don't know why we don't do
better on that band. Maybe we need more aluminum in the air or a receive
preamp. Clearly for 222 we need to get more power. We need to beg, borrow,
or steal a KW class amplifier for that band. We also need to get Brian some
help on that band. He has done it alone for the last couple of years along
with the computer networking and that is too much for one person. We can
discuss this further at our next meeting which brings me to the next
question, when and where do we want to have our first meeting in 2002? I
was thinking of either the Dalton, GA Hamfest on February 23rd or the
Kennehoochee Hamfest on March 16th and 17th. We have done it at
Kennehoochee in the past but I was thinking that Dalton might be more
convenient for the guys in TN, SC and NC. It also gives me an excuse to go
to Dalton which I have heard from several folks is a really good hamfest.
Let me know your preference, if you have one, and I will send out an e-mail
to everyone announcing the meeting. That's it for now.
