You are correct Brian. I was speaking of just the couple of years that Bob
and I have worked together on 432 and microwaves. I think the Sept 2000
contest was the one where we had some good tropo conditions and were able to
work K8GP and some others on those bands. Also, as you pointed out, there
were more operators available then for the microwave station. As far as
locals and rovers are concerned there are only a few (two or three) who even
have 3456 gear. I don't know who has 5760 and 10 GHz but Bob probably knows
(jump in here Bob if you want). So far Bob and I have been unsuccessful at
getting one of those guys to give us a Q. One year one station heard us but
we couldn't hear them. We found out later that their transmitter was
broken. That same year another station said they would work us on 3456 but
they couldn't do it then because they wanted to catch the breakfast special
at the pancake house (it was Sunday morning). We never heard from them
again. This year we were setting up with the only station we heard with
3456 when the big thunderstorm rolled through and we had to go QRT. We
never heard that guy again either. I think I speak for Bob when I say that
unless there is either more microwave activity so we don't have to depend on
just a couple of guys getting on or we get more help with the microwave
station it is unlikely that we will invest the time and money into higher
bands. That all having been said, if Mike is successful in his attempt to
get more rovers out there with microwave gear then that would probably
change everything. If Bob and I thought that there would be 5 rovers out
there with 10 GHz each going to 5 grids (25 potential Qs) we would probably
move heaven and earth to get a 10 GHz station ready before June. Now to
your question about the 903 station. Bob really needs to speak to that but
I wouldn't think it would make much difference. We would still have to put
the station and antennas together (just in a different trailer) and it isn't
like the microwave station is overworked making Qs. As a matter of fact
without the Qs on 903 Bob would probably sleep even more than he does during
the contest! Anyway, like I said before, I wish Mike well in his endevour
and W4NH will be glad to do whatever we can to help.
