Hey Jeff,
Wonderful to hear from you especially since you are in the Nashville
area. Not much activity from down there.
That is good news and bad news since lots of people will need those
grids, the bad part is that getting your
Signal out so they can work you will not be easy. You see, it is a
trade off as a rover, do the hard to get
Grid squares which is what we do the best, and then finding a way to
actually work enough people to make
It worthwhile.
Your question on roving in the mountains as opposed to just a high
points near grid lines is a hard one to
Answer for me. My first inclination is to always pick the best high
mountain I can find so I can work as
Many people as possible. Can you stay in the lowlands and still work
some stations? Yes, depending
On where that is, because your signal will be much shorter, you cannot
work as far out, so if there are
Several stations NEAR BY, you will do ok and give a big boost to the
contest multipliers for others.
My gut feeling, although I have never roved in your area, is that you
will need those mountain spots from
Down there. Others may have different opinions, I will share your
questions with the rover group.
Yes we will have a data base on the rovers grids, keep in mind that we
want ACTIVITY, especially for
The mountaintop stations and home stations, We have gone to great
lengths in the past to travel
To distant grids, only to work a few stations. That is the way it is
here in the Southeast mountains,
One, we do not have the ham populations like the Northeast, and TWO, we
can be on the wrong
Side of the mountain to work the largest group of contesters. Everyone
will be happy if we can
Work them from lots of grids, that will generate excitement and more
activity.
If you would like some ideas on where you might get the most results and
still give out some good
Grids, perhaps we can get ideas from other rovers. Lots of experience
to learn from.
Jeff, as far as mounting a rover station in three weeks, do what you
can, even a few bands would be
A great help. My offer is always open to help you in any way to
participate this year. What will be your
Rover vehicle, we might have some antenna mounting ideas for
you............
I will forward this to the group and we can get some idea flowing.

ANYONE NEEDING HELP WITH THEIR ROVER? GEAR? ANTENNAS? MOUNTING?
I am interested in rovering, but have a few questions for you.
1. Is it necessary to rove close to the mountains? I am west of
Nashville and have a few rare grids close by. Is it better to use the
high elevation of the mountains to your advantage?
2. Is someone going to map the rovers' grids? it would seem that if
several rovers operated from the same squares it would defeat the
purpose.
Any help would be appreciated. I am not sure if I will be ready in three
weeks, but will try. Jeff NY4N
