[Fourlanders] September contest / gas shortage

Well, I had the same concern yesterday as I was leaving work at way past
6:00 and witnessed what the world around north metro Atlanta had become
in just a few hours.
Streets jammed with people trying to get gas, lines of cars everywhere,
wrecks, people actually fist fighting in one station, and witnessed my
favorite stations closed with yellow barrier tape around the pump
islands.
Yes, stations ran out of fuel because every nut around here panicked,
left work early, and they all sucked the stations dry !!
Yes, driving up to Shelby this weekend is going to be EXPENSIVE. Driving
to the mountain the following week is going to be EXPENSIVE
But, today there is relative calm.......half of the stations around here
are reopen and I just fueled my Suburban at lunchtime for the Shelby
trip.....there were actually open pumps beside me......and they didn't
limit my purchase to 8 gallons like yesterday's rumors.
And, the pipelines coming into Atlanta (where we get 25% of our fuel),
and then going north are pumping again this morning at 30% capacity,
according to the Governor's office.
(Isn't it funny that they don't mention the 50-70% of our Atlanta
gasoline that comes from the Savannah refineries ??)
My strategy on this thing is that the further from Atlanta you get, the
more fuel you will find available because those areas don't have the
same Atlanta "nut population". Sure, the price is going to be up, but
not what people in Atlanta were paying yesterday. Now, I could be wrong,
but that is one thing I plan to scope out on the drive to and from
Shelby.

Gang,
High gas/diesel price certainly will make it more costly to do our mini
DXpedition to Milehigh campground However, the real concern is
availability.
I have heard that several stations in the local area are out of gas. I
will be going out tomorrow to do some errands and will check on the
supplies.
Fortunately, I filled up last week and my tank and spare gas can are
full.
I am concerned that supply will be even more of a problem next weekend,
especially in the more remote areas such as where we are planning to go.
I
also think we should do our part and eliminate non-essential driving by
canceling our operation.
Please express your opinions. I will go along with what ever consensus
is reached.
