W4ZST 2007 Dayton Report

Finally getting around to this after Dayton, prep for VHF Contest and
VP2EDH DXpedition

The Thursday night VHFers get-together at the Shuckin’ Shack, organized
by K5AND, was once again a success for the forty or so participants.
Good Food, drink and discussion were the order of business for the
evening. Don’t miss it next year, keep an eye out for notices on the
reflectors before hand. Thanks to Dick for putting this good time
together for us.

Our spaces at the flea market were dominated by the new K4RF motor home
which drew much attention. No one noticed the dancing girls we had
trying to sell our meager flea-market offerings. Instead all eyes were
drawn to the Freightliner/Mercedes/DynaMax motor coach as it could
hardly be called an ordinary RV. With our penchant for naming rolling
stock, we have decided to christen it the “Bluesmobile” and I’m sure
Steve and Shirley will like that. Special thanks to Steve for making it
our Dayton HQ area and to he and Dick K5AND for obtaining and
organizing the spaces for all of us and SVHFS to share. Meeting and
greeting our friends there were Steve K4RF, Dick K5AND, Jim W4KXY, Bob
W4ZST, Bill KI4US, Ron WW8RR and Jim WE8W.

We enjoyed the flea-market shopping, talking with new and old friends
and checking out the bounty of new radios and gear introduced this year.
We all found some buys in the flea-market and sold some of the items
we brought. Some went home with receipts for new radios in hand to be
shipped later. They will be looking forward to having fun with them and
to returning to Dayton next year for more of the same.

The Friday night VHF banquet was another great time. Thanks to Tony
WA8RJF and Tom WA8WZG for putting together another good one. Excellent
food and conversation at the Holiday Inn were enjoyed by all attending.
Everyone enjoyed the round-robin introductions with six-digit grid
squares as Tony called on the six-digit table numbers around the room.
Palle, OZ1RH gave us a interesting talk about VHF operating practices in
Europe. Tony and Tom capped off the evening witht the ever popular door
prize drawing sending a number of smiling faces out into the evening.
Keep your eyes peeled for next years banquet annoucement and join the
great group.

Nice weather at Dayton this year to make it another succesful and
enjoyable Dayton trip. Looking forward to next year and hope to see you
there.

73, Bob W4ZST
