Check this out guys!  I could take a month off from work and just read and
study what is on this website.  This could end up being right up there with
the Rad Lab series published after WW II.  If you ever wondered how they get
those pictures and data back from a spacecraft flying by a planet millions
of miles away, this tells you how.  It is good to see that our tax dollars
do result in something good once in a while.

JPL has provided a book that is directly applicable to noise, noise
measurements, LNAs and antenna temperatures as they apply to microwave
communications. It has a lot of good technical "meat" in it, and should
clarify the subject.

This book has almost everything you would like to know on the subject, and
can be downloaded from the web site:

The book in question is Monograph 10, titled "Low Noise Systems in the Deep
Space Network" (about a 12 MB download). Some of the other stuff on this
site should be pretty interesting, also.
