[Fourlanders] FW: Paper and presentation at the SVHFS Conference

FYI. Some good advice from K1WHS. We already plan to do a third low yagi
on 6 for June. The phasing line idea for the stack will have to wait until
we have more time to engineer that.

Jim,

Having an antenna on a mountain poses a problem. Its a good problem
though. Because of land drop off in most directions, the actual radiation
angle will be lower than theory projects for flat ground. The six meter yagi
system should have one very low antenna. In addition, I would provide some
delay line of about 180 degrees to flip the pattern of a stacked system such
as what you are running at W4NH. The uptilt will fill in on a small
percentage of the contacts made when high angle signals are coming in. If
higher angles occur 10% of the time, you could stand to improve your score
by 10% as well. No small trick with everything else already in play.

Dave

Right now at W4NH we are running a stacked pair of 5 element yagis at 45 and
60 feet (on top of a 5400 foot mountain). Unfortunately, because we have to
setup and tear down for every contest our tower and antennas have to be
portable and a bit more modest. The stacked pair works well but we are also
seeing a gap at 500 - 600 miles. We were thinking about adding a phasing
capability to raise the takeoff angle. For this June and possibly September
we are going to add a third 5 element yagi at 15 - 20 feet that is
independent of the stacked pair and be able to switch back and forth. We
hope that the lower single yagi will have the higher takeoff angle we are
looking for. Now you see why your presentation is of great interest to us.
Any suggestions you may have would also be of great interest to us.

Hello Jim,

Very cool! I forgot that Robin had it on his computer. That was one big
file! Good luck on 50 MHz with W4NH. I really believe that any array can be
fine tuned for better results. Having many options is very important
especially on 50 MHz.

It turns out that I already have the PowerPoint file. I got it from Robin
so the paper was all that I needed. Thanks for your help.

Hi Jim

The power point file is 32 MB, so it may be a problem to download. The
Word file is 1.3 MB and I included it here. Can you download a 32 MB PPT
file?

I want to change the presentation a bit. CQ VHF wants to publish it as
well, so I will go over it and change a few things for added clarity. All
small stuff though.

I had a wonderful time at the SEVHF Conference. It was great to see all
the guys and put a face with the calls that I have so much fun working! You
have a great and dynamic group there!

It was good to see you at the conference this past weekend Dave.
Unfortunately, I missed your presentation Saturday morning but I read your
paper with great interest. I would like to share your wisdom with my fellow
W4NH 6 meter operators. Can you share with us your PowerPoint slides and
the .doc or .pdf of your paper? I could scan it but I don't think the
charts and pictures will come out very well. Thanks again.
