Sounds like it may have gotten "tickled" by a nearby lighting strike or a power line surge and now has it's firmware scrambled.
>From the last time we had intense lighting storms move through the area (and I never took any direct hit), I lost a small LCD TV, a cable modem, small wine cooler, and memories scrambled in an older Kenwood 2M radio I leave turned on.
But from a known nearby hit, the UHF repeater controller on Sawnee Mountain lost it's brain and had have the firmware memory chip replaced.

Maybe, but I do not see any dolphins, and the reset mode to get out of demo does not work

It almost sounds like it's in demo mode. Could that be a possibility?
