[Fourlanders] Fwd: K5QE June 2010 Score - Simply Amazing!

We had a great start on Saturday but between being handicapped with only 100
Watts because of a generator failure and the band going out on us Sunday
afternoon left us with a good score but not as good as we could have
probably achieved. My hats off to WG8S, W4ATL, W4ZST and the rest of the 6
meter and other band teams for operating under some challenging conditions.
Great job! Also my congratulations to K5QE and K5TR! Conditions in Texas
must have been great. The guys in the Northeast had better start paying
some attention to Texas!

Now on to the contest postmortem. One thing is clear to me from all of
this. We need to have a backup generator plan just like we have backup
plans for rigs, amplifiers, etc. We got comfortable with the big diesel and
it has served us well but it is a single point of failure and as all good
engineers know, single points of failure require backup. If Tom had not
brought his Honda 2 kw and we had not been able to borrow that 5 kw from
Paul's buddy the contest would have been over for us Saturday night. I too
like the rest of you groan at the idea of having to haul yet more stuff to
the mountain just in case but it is what it is as my friend "evil bill"
likes to say. We can continue to discuss this in more depth in the lead up
to September but that is my 2 cents.

Update on the Explorer. As many of you know, I had the check engine light
come on while we drove up to the mountain. The Explorer made it to the
mountain top and back home OK. I took it to my mechanic today to read and
diagnose the codes. He called and said that the computer has a bunch of
automatic transmission codes in it. He admitted that this is a bit above
his head and that he is going to call a couple of transmission guys that he
knows to get a definitive answer on how bad this is. I will know a bit more
tomorrow.

It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart
you are. If it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong.

Yes, it is a really great score.
Did you see what K5TR managed on six as a single OP from here in Austin?
Just under 1900 Qs and over 300 grids!

First time, ever, that stations have gone over 1800 Qs!
