At one time I worked in management at a salvage facility (new politically correct name for a junk yard) and most of the nations top yards list on that site parts for sale. Some offer lifetime parts only warranties as well for a small additional cost. I would suggest a search for a tranny on the following website as well as eBay. We sold a lot of parts on there and you would be surprised the amount of parts on their for sale.. That of course is if you absolutely need to replace it. I wonder if the solenoid locked shut and starved the valve body and the rest of the transmission of vital cooling transmission fluid. Dunno but that is a guess.

I talked to my mechanic again today and he said that a solenoid in the valve
body internal to the transmission has failed. The only option he offered me
was a rebuilt transmission for $3,000. Not an option I am likely to take
with an almost 9 year old vehicle with over 150,000 miles on it that, by the
way, is running just fine. A couple of questions for the brain trust on
here. It seems to me that a failed solenoid is a damn minor reason to
replace an entire transmission. Do any of you know of anyone who actually
works on transmissions? At the very least I am going to want a second
opinion on this so any suggestions of a good transmission shop in the area?
Any other suggestions or ideas on how I should proceed? I would really like
to keep the Explorer going so we will have another vehicle available for
towing but not if it is going to cost me $3,000.

It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart
you are. If it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong.
