The first couple of paragraphs of the article paints a more realistic picture of the contest conditions overall and resulting discouragement, to the point only a small percentage actually sent in logs this time >>
"Log submissions were down this year with a total of 434 entries. However, log submissions only tell a part of the story. Checking all of the submitted logs indicates that a total of about 2800 stations made at least one contact with one of the 434 entrants. Thus, only 15% of the contest participants actually sent in a log."

The September results were just released on the ARRL Web page.
We were 10th in Full Multi with the terrible conditions. Apparently
some other areas of the country fared a little better with propagation.
Also, if we had entered limited we would have been 8th. At least we
showed in the top ten. I was figuring we wouldn't even make that with
the paltry 17k points.
