DFing sounds like the best option. Let us know the outcome.

Subject: [Fourlanders] old callsign request - info
First of all, to answer Jim and Sherman. We know the call isn't valid. We're trying to find out who the guy is and how to contact him.
It appears now we may need to do some DF work.
We want to avoid on-the-air confrontation in case he has some issues like Alzheimer's. He is an older gentleman and we're not out to bury him.
His demeanor is every bit that of an experienced ham. He's been around the hobby at some point. He knows the lingo. He knows the equipment. He knows how to do proper exchanges and QSO's. He just doesn't have a valid call.
And, that's one area where we wonder about him. 98% of the time he says WA4AFN. He has also said K4AFN, N4AFN, W4AFN, and WB4AFN.
He's a gentleman on the air. He's not causing interference. We've tried different ways of coaxing information out of him, but to no avail.
THANK YOU everybody for looking at what callbooks you have. From snippets from 1981, 1988, 1993, and QRZ.com we can probably safely assume the call, if it ever was valid, was issued before 1971.
If we get to talk to the guy and get an outcome, I'll keep you posted.
73! ... Kim
