I just found a really neat workshop tool -- a parts tester that
identifies resistors, caps, inductors, transistors, etc. and gives the
value. It has a graphical display -- here's a picture of mine looking
at a 2N2222 transistor.

They're available all over eBay advertised as "Mega 328" with various
electronic words following, and are incredibly cheap -- mine was $14.98
with free shipping from the U.S. -- in fact, it was sent from Berkeley
Lake Road in Duluth! Each seller has a slightly different version; the
one with the graphics display seems to be most useful. The bare board
version like mine probably won't last very long; for a few bucks more
you can get one with an enclosure.
