Jack Audrey CQ Magazine March 2021 March Cover Digital_.png

Hello folks,
You know Jack KM4ZIA and Audrey KM4BUN from their ham radio adventures over the past 8 years.  Jack is a General, Audrey is an Extra.

A teenage brother and sister team who make ham radio a science-based adventure with a lot of fun and smiles. To stay at the top of their STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) programs at school, they both put in 3-4 hours of homework, 7 days a week.  But in addition, they put in countless volunteer hours to promote ham radio to kids.

I've lost track of how many live, and video presentations they've conducted. But they all focus on filling our shoes with licensed teenage amateur radio operators.  If you've ever put on a presentation in front of a club, you have an idea of what Jack and Audrey do.  They create and host presentations of their own design, speaking their own words, while honoring those who paved the road for them.

We would be proud to know that you would register for the "QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo".  It starts today.  You can win a GREAT prize!

Watch for Jack and Audrey near 12 noon on Sunday, 14 March 2021. You'd give them a lift if you posted a question as a club member in the Q & A portion following their presentation.

P.S. What you will *not* see over the next two days is Jack and Audrey working for hours and hours on the dining room laptop, serving as chat moderators for other forums.

The QSO Today Virtual Ham Radio Expo (Expo) scheduled for March 13-14, 2021 is coming up this weekend! Just a reminder to get your early bird discounted tickets now ($10) as prices increase to $12.50 starting March 12.

The following is an Expo update on several important subjects so keep reading:

  • Check out the amazing prize drawings from some of the Exhibitors (to enter just stop by their booths). Here’s a short sample (check out the full list of Prizes):

  • FlexRadio Flex-6400 HF/50Mhz Transceiver ($1999 retail)

  • Elecraft KX2 Shack-In-A-Box ($1346 retail)

  • RFinder B1 VHF/UHF DMR With Embedded Smartphone ($1299 retail)

  • Learn from a packed, world-class line-up of 87 speakers and workshops spread across 10 different theatres!  Whether new to ham radio or years of experience, you’ll find many fascinating topics. And since it’s impossible to watch all the Live presentations of interest, come back anytime through April 12 to see the rest (it’s included in the ticket). Check out the full list at Speakers.

  •

  • Participate in a variety of “tracks” with something for everyone.

  • For example, thanks to Michelle Thompson, W5YNV, there’s a full day track on Amateur Space Radio for beginner to advanced levels. Participate in the Expo’s Youth Forum, Sunday morning, organized by Carol Perry, WB2MGP. There’s a track for expert hams - for example on subjects such as “Pipeline Type Radio Wave Propagation” and “Double Inverted HF Delta Skeleton Slot Antenna”.

  •

  • For the less experienced there’s much to watch such as “Getting Started in Remote HF Operating” and “An Overview of Parks on the Air”.

  •

  • Take advantage of our new calendar technology. Go to the Speakers page and download speaker times in your local time zone directly to your Google or Outlook calendar. You’ll then have a complete schedule of sessions to join to maximize your time with speakers that are the most important.

  •

  • For the first time in virtual ham history, participate in an exciting build-a-thon of live virtual kit building workshops.  Workshops are targeted at all levels of ham radio experience. And it’s not a problem if you can’t get a kit in time for the Live period - just order now and build the kit by watching the workshop video during the on-demand period through April 12. Check out Kits to see all the cool and exciting things to build!

  •

  • Check out our new live round table video for attendees to interact with each other, exhibitors, and speakers (you’ve got to experience this!). Come into the main virtual lounge with over 200 tables where anybody can just sit and meet up with friends and colleagues. We’ll also have tables to facilitate networking and discussions on specific subject areas such as HOA Antennas and Software Defined Radio.

  •

  • Visit the Exhibit area to see the latest in ham radio technology from 40+ companies.  Sit at virtual booth tables with exhibit staff to see product demos, answer questions, schmooze, and take orders - all done over live video. For example, FlexRadio will be offering a track of 11 different speakers on a variety of how-to and product topics, including the new Tuner Genius XL. Engage directly with FlexRadio staff to answer questions, view live demonstrations of remote operation on the Flex platform and more.

The festivities start Friday night, March 12, at 18:00 PST with several exciting Podcasts from the Podcasting Pavilion as well as a Techno Dance Party After Hours from the Amateur Space Radio Auditorium.

On March 13 and 14 sessions start at 8am Pacific. We also set our clock forward between Saturday and Sunday.

ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio® in the United States, is a QSO Today Expo Partner.  FlexRadio is the Expo’s Platinum Sponsor, and Gold sponsors are Elecraft, RFinder, Connect Systems, QuickSilver Radio, and Mouser Electronics.
