For those curious, it is any arduino, a GPS module and i2c 2x16 lcd.

We are using uno but nano should do just as well.

Hello Kos and the group,

Johnny, K7SYS, also offered me a TM-D710GA. Thank you both! At the moment, I am going to decline. I have had a TinyTrak 4 APRS TNC connected to an Alinco DR1200 2m mobile permanently mounted in the truck for many years. I just need to test the system. I also have spares for each piece. That will take care of my radio based APRS spotting. I also realized that the ‘D710’ solution would require me to learn yet another radio on short notice. Some of these things need to be kept simple.

With just ½ hour of spare time and parts he already had, Bill, KI4US, pulled an Arduino Grid Square sketch from the ‘net and put this together on his workbench:

I already have an Arduino Uno that was idle and the balance of parts were less than $25.00. I ordered parts today that should arrive on Wednesday. I expect to be able to duplicate my own copy of the above by this weekend.

In other news related to this rover project, I received a “600w” W6PQL 23cm amplifier pallet and related support circuitry. Bob and I will be replicating the example of KB7Q. He used the same RF pallet and made many contacts via 23cm EME and claimed to run 500w in ‘JT modes. Bob has identified some choices for heat sinks and cases. See this link for more details about KB7Q:

THANK YOU ALL!

Brian,

I have a TM-D710GA that I am not using. I unpackaged and programmed it, but it was never installed anywhere. You’re welcome to use it for your trip if you like, or I’d consider selling it if you’re interested.

Let me know and I can get it to you.

Of course.

Oops.

I sent a blank reply from fat fingering my phone.

Double darn. D710’s seem to rare as hen’s teeth. The Griduino complete kit and nearly fully built are both out of stock. It seems the only Griduino parts available are the bare board and case. I’m visiting my son a college this weekend. I’ll run the parts list through DigiKey and others to see what the shortages look like after I get home.

Any other suggestions?

Bill, depending on what the shortages are, would you be able to help reprogram for substitutions?

Thanks all!

Brian

Hi Brian,

Check out Griduino, it was custom designed for this purpose:

Brian,

You may want to checkout the Kenwood D710ga. I had the earlier version and used it for 10 + years. Great aprs radio setup.  On mine you could have the display give full gps data, but I do not recall if it was 4 or 6 digit grid reporting.

You could check the specs or manual from Kenwood for the actual specs.

Jerry

PS - I sold mine at Dayton earlier this year.  Bummer, I would have loaned it to you.

I want this information while driving with a simple screen and large text. I won?t use one that requires phone manipulation while driving.

I intend to have HF and 6m phone while driving. I want to have knowledge of my current grid to take advantage of 6m propagation enhancements. It would be even better to know how close the next grid is in the direction I?m traveling.
