Descendants of Richard Hooper

Generation No. 1

1. RICHARD3 HOOPER (OBEDIAH2, OBEDIAH1) was born March 25, 1782, and died
June 18, 1855 in Shelby Co., TX.. He married ISABELLA SHAW December 23,
1806. She was born January 19, 1788, and died February 04, 1860 in Shelby
Co., TX..

Notes for RICHARD HOOPER:
>From Hooper Genealogy A Southern Branch, Vol. II, by Flora Hooper Collier

Obediah Jr.'s eldest son, Richard Hooper, was a first cousin of John Word
Hooper (Richard, Obediah). Born on March 29, 1783 in Georgia, he was married
in Georgia on December 23, 1806 to Isabella Shaw (born January 19, 1788).
Isabella was a niece of United States President John Adams. His father,
Obediah, who was Justice of the Peace, performed the marriage ceremony.

In February, 1836, Richard came to Shelby County, Texas, probably from
Tennessee or Alabama. He was commander of a calvary company from San
Augustine, Texas from July 6 to October, 1836. Richard received his headright
certificate for land in Shelby County on February 1, 1838.

A member of the House of Representatives of the first Texas Republic Congress
from Shelby County, Richard was also a county surveyor in 1839, 1840 and 1848.

In 1839-1840 he acted as County Surveyor, a draft of $622.25 was issued him
in Jan 1840 for his services in this position, he having run the Shelby
County lines. In August 1848, Richard Hooper was again elected County
Surveyor of Shelby, his last recorded office.

He was classified in the Agricultural Census, taken September 13, 1850, as a
farmer and stock raiser in Shelby Co. Two months later, November 8th, he
transferred to Chas. S. Mann in Travis County, a warrant for his recent
service as a Surveyor. No further facts pertaining to Hooper's life have been
found."

It is believed that this Richard Hooper is the eldest son of Obediah Jr.,
Justice of Peace, who performed the marriage between he and Isabella Shaw, 23
Dec 1806, recorded in "Franklin Co. Ga., Marriage Records".

In Obediah's pension application he gave their various moves from Va., to
S.C., to Franklin Co. Ga., abt. 1788; removed to Bedford Co. Tenn., abt.
1811, removed to Tuscaloosa Co. Ala., abt. 1816, then to Pickens Co. Ala.,
abt. 1822 and remained there until he died, 31 May 1839.
The record of births of Richard's children occurred in Tenn., in 1811 through
1830. In Obediah's pension application was an affidavit; his son John M.
Hooper states that he moved Obediah and Sarah from Ga., to Bedford Co. Tenn.,
then back to Ala.
Dr. and Mrs. Norman Duren of Beaumont, Tex., took a trip to Bedford Co.
Tenn., in Apr. 1962, where they found a Deed to John Hooper in 1821; one to
George W., George S., Benjamin, James, William and a Charles.
2 Richard and John M. were the two eldest and only sons of Obediah Jr., and
his lst wife Sally Gates. There was an Obediah in the "Bedford Co. Tenn., Tax
List for 1812", but his name does not appear in other searching.

I do not know who owns the Bible in which the above records
                                                   are to be found. I
understand Mrs. W. sent a copy from her
photostat copy of same. She stated that she only sent records
pertaining to the Hooper name, as she only considered them of
importance to me. I do so wish that she had sent the complete
record, for of course they are allied lines. She said there
was William M. Hooper, b. Apr. 7, 1804 obviously is not Richard's son as he
and Ibby were not married until 1806. Mrs. Washburne did not know which ones
listed in this record were children of Richard and Ibby, but I have since
received a copy of an old letter of an oil company written in 1934 concerning
some acreage of land in East Texas which they were seeking to lease for
drilling purposes, and it names the children of Richard and Ibby Hooper as
heirs to the property. They were as follows;

(1) George Washington Hooper
(2) Monroe Hooper
(11) Jeff Hooper
(4) Franklin Hooper
(5) Fate Hooper
(6) Caroline Hooper
(7) Betsy Hooper m. a Mr. Longacre (Elizabeth J. Hooper?)
