Hello,
George K. Hooper is proving to be very allusive but I think I have found a
very good candidate. To remind you; my ggg-grandmother was Catherine
Hooper. She was born about 1815. She married John B. Benton on 12 Apr 1829
at Fortress Monroe, Virginia. The announcement in the Norfolk and
Portsmouth Herald on Monday 13 Apr 1829 read:
Married- At Old Point Comfort on Sunday, by Rev. Cheevers, John D. Benton,
O.M. Sergeant of the lst Regt., U.S. Artillery, to Miss Catharine Hooper,
youngest dau. of George K. Hooper, dec'd. (p. 3, c. 2).
I have found compelling evidence that George was the Master of the Port at
Fortress Monroe and he had other children:
1. Joseph Kent Hooper, the oldest son, was master of the Watertown,
Massachusetts Arsenal for a number of years. Later, his division of the
Army fought against Santa Anna for Mexico.
2. Julia married Jose' de Anguera who was born June 3, 1810, in Reus,
Spain. He was a musician and they removed to Philadelphia, on to New York
and later to Boston.
Apparently George had a brother who was a soldier under Washington in the
Revolution.
I surly would appreciate if anyone could provide any additional information
on this Hooper Family.
Thank you!
Yours truly,
David, on the central coast, California, USA
