All Hooper Researchers,
Bill Fisher is the host for this list and many others. He has never charged
us any money and I think this is only the second time he has asked for a
small contribution for his service since the list was started about 5 years
ago. Please see the note from Bill below and make any donation you can.
Thanks
Ron
Contesting.com & eHam.net Users
I have been hosting the Contesting.com and eHam.net web sites and mailing
lists on my network since 1996. In the beginning, my company (Akorn Access)
provided the hosting for free. Since we started the eHam.net web site two
years ago and began to accept advertising, eHam has been able to pay a small
amount each month toward the hosting costs.
Today, eHam.net and Contesting.com steadily consume more than a T-1 of
bandwidth. Combined, the two sites deliver well over 4 million pages and
push more than 200 gigabytes of data each month. The success of both sites
and all of the mailing lists are demanding more and redundant bandwidth.
However, we face the question of how to pay for it.
The cost to host this level of bandwidth most anywhere else would exceed
$2000 per month. eHam is currently paying only $250.00 per month, which
leaves Akorn Access out of pocket for at least $23,700 per year.
In the past, I have been able to cover these costs because Akorn was doing
well enough in other areas and the utilization was not as high. With the
recent slow down in the economy and our changing Internet access business,
Akorn is unable to continue this level of support.
Many potential advertisers are engrained in their print advertising, and
refuse to acknowledge the Internet as a viable method of promoting their
products. We continue to sign up new advertisers, but not at the same rate
as the bandwidth utilization.
So, I?m reluctantly forced to turn to the users of both sites for ongoing
assistance.
We have an annual subscription program at eHam.net for users to help pay for
the site operations. We don?t define the amount of the subscription, but
rather suggest that each user define for themselves the site?s value, and
consider their own financial ability to subscribe. We suggest comparing
how much time you spend reading QST or CQ magazines with how much time you
spend reading eHam.net, Contesting.com, or the various mailing lists when
making your decision.
You can help by subscribing at http://www.eham.net/cart/product/111. If you
are unable to contribute by credit card, you can send a check to eHam.net,
5095 Hamptons Club Drive, Alpharetta, GA 30004.
Many thanks & 73

Message-ID: <93.2b8b2265.2b9ac49f@aol.com>
Greetings friends and kin,
The Hooper DNA project continues grow day by day. The project is helping to
untangle lines, unravel mysteries and provide new avenues for research.
We now have more than 40 participants with 30 results returned and posted.
The posted results represent eight different Hooper lineages. Be sure and
visit the results page at : http://www.hooperconnections.com/dnatable.html
You'll notice that we have a new web address. Be sure and reset your
bookmarks to the new main page at: http://www.hooperconnections.com
One of the recent people to sign up for the project is the first person we've
found with solid genealogical ties to Europe. He traces his ancestry to
Hoopers in Somersetshire, England. We're very excited about this development.
We hope that others with ties to ancestral Hooper villages will volunteer to
join our little group. Though the testing company we are using is in the
United States, Hoopers from anywhere in the world are eagerly sought.
We have also set up a funding project. We hope to be able to pay the way for
Hoopers from unrepresented or underrepresented lines for which no volunteer
participants can be found. For more information visit the funding page at:
http://www.hooperconnections.com/fundingfrontpage.html
The Hooper DNA project is now six months old. We've learned so much about our
ancestors and ourselves. The months and years to come will be just as
exciting.
Take care,
Wade Glascock

Hi Wade,
I just looked at the updated DNA results and see that the James Hooper (1776)
that married Jamima Bankson matched Obediah's line with a 12 count marker. I
always thought he would have been from Absalom's family group since he was
from Georgia. Since Obediah's children is well documented, could this be a
collateral line from a brother of Obediah? That group should consider
upgrading to the 24 marker test. What do you think Diane?
Everyone,
I would also like to see someone from the Louisiana or Mississippi Hoopers
come forward for testing. I thought that their Thomas Hooper ancestor was
part of Absalom's group but I am not sure since James goes back to Obediah.
Anyone on this list from the Louisiana Hoopers?

Subject: [Hooper] Family name change
Message-ID: <3E6A3D69.9080001@vonl.com>
I've waited to post anything on the mailing list until I had a real
contribution. But our family has made a slight breakthrough on our
family history search. Many know that families that migrated from Canada
to America (especially NY) changed their names or had it changed by
immigration workers upon their entry into the country. It turns out this
is also true for our family. But what is unique is the family name. It
turns out that our earliest family relative is Jacob and Josephine
Hooper. Their name was changed from originally Houple. We've also been
able, with this info, to link our family with two other Hooper families
in upstate NY that we were keeping an eye on. We had suspicions that
they were relatives and it proves we were right. But from all we've
researched, we are more and more sure we have no direct relation to the
Hooper families in Tenessee, Virginia or Georgia (or that area) and no
relation to the signer of the D.O.I. William. I wonder if anyone else
has heard of this name. I know it's legitimate because I've done
searches and found a girl listed on a sports team in Utah with this last
name. But internet searches don't provide much more. And we're going to
check out church records. The family has been traced to Lachine, Quebec.
But that's as far back as we go for now. I've got it fairly well listed
on my family website at
http://web.netstartel.com/~cage47
Stop by and take a look. (No it's not just a shameless plug for my site,
this really is big news for us and it might link other upstate NY
families if we can find them. I know there are a few branches of our
family tree that are not filled in yet)

According to Flora Hooper Collier's book, HOOPER GENEALOGY A Southern
Branch, volume 2, page 31 states Leanna Hooper, age 46 in 1860 census "Family
legend: 13 years of age when married; also they had 22 children." While it is
difficult to know for sure from which line your William you seek descended,
it is most likey, according to this book on pages 29-31, it appears to be
(1) Obediah Hooper and Massilva Brook(e)s (2) Thomas Hooper and Jessie
"Jincy" Wright (3) William Hooper and Susannah Harrison (4) Your William.

For some who have questioned the Buckner/Straw relationships, I found
this in the History of Shelby County, Vol 1:
"John W. Buckner was a resident of Tennneha District, which is now
Shelby County, In February 1836 where he signed a deed
for a tract of land in Matagora County. He was a native of Caroline
County, Virginia and his wife Elizabeth was a native of South Carolina.
He participated in the battle of Goliad as a member of Albert Horton's
Mounted Calvary. He left a will which he made in Abrahma Robert's home
in Shelby County dated June 6, 1837 leaving all his property to his
wife Elizabeth. They wee parents of the following children; Samuel
Buckner born 1824, Thomas Buckner born 1827, Susan A. Buckner born
1829, Elizabeth Buckner born 1833 and Francis Buckner born 1836. John
W. Buckner died in the latter part of 1837 while on a trip to Matagorda
County to attend to property inherited from his brother Aylett C.
Buckner. In the year 1838 Elizabeth, his widow married Leonard W.
Straw. He received a second class Land Grant in Shelby County of 640
acres in October 1838. Straw was one of 30 people who signed the papers
to create Shelby County out of the Tennaha District. Straw Creek in
Shelby County is named for him. Leonard Straw and Elizabeth Buckner
Straw with two small children are buried in Buckner Cemetery in Choice,
Texas"- Newman Buckner, grandson of Nathan Buckner
