Hello All
In looking for another line, I happened upon some Hooper folk in various articles from 1700s. If you are looking to find all "captains and kings" (or signers), some of the Virginia Gazette journalism may not be to your liking (and 300 years later, who knows what the truth of it may actually have been), however, there are some admirable Hoopers here too:
Richard Hooper of Va 6th Regiment, father lived in Lunenburg VA, described "about 20 years of age, about 6 feet high, of ? complexion, dark eyes and hair" by James Johnson who offers a reward to deliver him back to the commanding officer as he has deserted.  Also gone from regiment are:  James Winn, William Colley, James Butler, Joseph Bohanan, Young Stokes, Charles Hudson, James Jones, and Sugar Wright.  http://www.pastportal.com/cwdl_new/VA_Gazet/Images/P/1776/01090hi.jpg
Here's an early one from 1739:  the Hon. Robert L. Hooper. . .

Brigadier General Hooper of the Dorchester militia joins the Whigs to proceed upon the Tory encampment near Parker's mill.

More deserters--Amos Hooper enlisted in Willlimsburg along with John Lee and John St? of Bedford, James Vest of Buckingham, ? Wilkins of Henrico, John Dorton, ? Williams, and William Strange.

Twenty leagues above Natchez a French boat was robbed and all aboard murdered.  The villians are supposed to be Joshua Haywood, Earnest Hooper, Charles Holmes, Reason Young, Richard Holloway, and Absolam Hooper, most of whom were Regulators of North Carolina.

There were also a couple of small ads for Hoopers Pills.
In addition, on Ancestry I found a couple Hooper possiblities in Virginia (Isle of Wright, Augusta, and Norfolk) Land, Marriage & Probate Records from as early as the 1600s. Maj. Danll. Hooper 1698, Davie Hooper 1729, and John Hooper (with Hutsons) in 1783.
