I am the grgrgranddaughter of William Hooper of Asheville, NC who is
buried in the cemetary below with his wife Mary (Owens) Hooper, a few
of their children, and other relatives for which I'm researching the
lineage. I'd be interested in continuing a dialogue with Deanna and
others who are archiving Hooper information. Please contact me, as I
am beginning my research.
I am Reshounn Foster, 37 yrs. old, born July 22, 1968 (exactly four
years after Judge Frank Hooper's race trial). Mary and William had 9

birth to my graunt Dorothy and

OLD BRACKETT TOWN CEMETERY
McDowell County, NC
By W. D. Floyd
To get to this cemetery from Highway NC 226 at Dysartsville, NC go
south on Vein Mountain Road for about 4.4 miles and find Brackett
Town Road bearing off to the east and follow it for about 3 to 3.5
miles. The driveway to the cemetery is on the left a few hundred
after you cross the little one lane bridge. The driveway has a small
section of picket fence on each side just as you turn off of Brackett
Town Road. This driveway ends at the cemetery. This is a cemetery
with both African-American and white interned here. The African-
American is the first part that you see and is very well maintained.
The white graves are all in the woods and all grown up and not
maintained at all. There are probably over a hundred graves either
unmarked or marked with field stones in the black section and 40-50
unmarked or marked with field stones in the white part. The white
part is so scattered out and grown over that it is impossible to tell
how many are there. I was there March 25, 1998 and started on the
east end of the African-American section.
