"one interesting facet of the Monroe connection, in Rhodes Memorial,
Atlanta, GA, we found in the "Loose Manuscript Hooper File" a letter
from Felix W. Motlow of Tullahoma, Tenn. dated 28 Dec 1942 to Director
of Rhodes Memorial Archives, Atlanta; enclosed was a picture of an old
colonial clock. He stated it was known as the "Monroe Clock" passed
down through Nancy's family. He also said Nancy was a cousin of
President James Monroe. (Conjecture: it is possible that Obadiah's
mother was a Monroe since so many of the 2nd and 3rd generations named
sons and daughters Monroe for 2nd names. One of Obadiah's daughters
married Johnson Monroe, but they moved to Barren County, Kentucky and
it seems unlikely that these many descendants would be named for him.
Too, she was the next to the youngest of the family and her brothers
and sisters married and had already named most if not all their
children before she married. Also to rule out he custom of naming
children after presidents, Monroe entered office 1817 and many of the
3rd generation were already named Monroe before that date."
