L. Naomi Green
Anchorage, Alaska - Naomi Hooper Green, 77, of Anchorage, Alaska, died
peacefully Sunday, December 21, 2008, at Providence Extended Care Center in
Anchorage.
Naomi was born November 28, 1931, in Caney Fork, N.C., the daughter of Thomas
R. and Dollie Mae Gosnell Hooper. She graduated from Sylva High School in
1949. Out of High School Naomi adventurously moved from a small country town to
Washington D.C. where she worked for the Navy Department. In June 1952 she
left D.C. to move to Alaska and marry Jack Green having known each other in
High School. She continued to live in Anchorage until the time of her death.
Naomi continued her civil service career in Alaska by working for FAA at
Merrill Field. In the early 60's she and Jack bought and operated Hilltop
Cut-Rate, a drug store on Government Hill. They were in that store when the 1964
earthquake hit. In 1969 they started a wholesale toy business and operated that
together until their retirement in 1990.
Naomi was a member of First Baptist Church, Anchorage. She was committed to
church nursery and literacy outreach for many years. Naomi had a passion for
genealogy, tracing portions of her family tree back more than 20 generations.
She loved gardening, knitting and crocheting, earning ribbons for handicrafts
in the Alaska State Fair.
Naomi is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, William Jack Green and
her brothers, Thomas and Otto Hooper. Surviving are her daughter, Cozette
Green of Anchorage; and son, Clayton Green of Washington, D.C. Naomi is also
survived by sisters, Mamie Raby of Franklin, N.C., Velma Plemmons and Lois
Ensley of Sylva, N.C.; sisters-inlaw. Nell Sanford of Sylva and Mary Hooper of
Rock Hill, S.C.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 30, in the chapel of
Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, 59 Cherry Street, Sylva, N.C. The Rev. Tommy
James will preside with special music by Beverly Minor of First Baptist Church,
Atlanta. The family will receive friends prior to the service from noon to 1
p.m. Burial will follow at Addie Cemetery.
