It was nineteen nights before Christmas and all through the house, not a
creature was stirring except for the two young girls communicating
accross the country with each other using code on the 40 meter novice
band.

Nine year old Alyssa KB9THU contacted ten year old Rebecca KB0VVT for
the first time on December 6, 1998. This was Alyssa's very first CW
contact. Great Job Alyssa and keep up the great work! How often do you
think a nine and ten year old girl has done that in the past? They
first exchanged RSTs of 599 and then each gave their QTH. They then
talked about the weather. After this came the important stuff:

What is your favorite color?
What grade are you in?
What is your favorite food and drink?
What is you favorite subject?

They discovered that they both like Sprite and each have a pet dog.
Rebecca's dog is a Keeshond named Bingo while Alyssa owns a much bigger
Great Dane named Sabrina. They are both planning on participating in the
upcoming 10 meter contest.

They talked about how they were the only amateur radio operators at
there local grade schools. This was the very first time they had really
communicated with someone their own age using Amateur Radio other than
the Kids Day Contest. Perhaps, now, they will become friends and
contact each other more often. Only the future will tell.

Alyssa and Rebecca are regular participants in the Kids Day Contest.
You can learn more about Kids Day and see photos of Alyssa and Rebecca
along with others in the upcoming January 1999, article in QST.
